What is the Difference Between King Sheets and California King sheets?

“In this California King bed, we’re 10,000 miles apart..” or so Rihanna says. But, how do we properly quantify the difference between King sheets and California King sheets?

Perhaps the biggest and most blatant difference between King sheets and California King sheets is the dimension; King sheets are made for shorter and wider beds while California King sheets are made for longer and narrower beds. To be more specific, a King size bed measures 76 x 80 inches (width x length) while a California King bed measures 72 x 84 inches (width x length). As you can see, the California King is a few inches narrower but it is noticeable longer.

In terms of surface area, the California King has less surface area than a King bed. A standard King bed has a surface area of 6,080 square inches while a California King bed has a surface area of 6,048 inches. As you can see, it’s far from Rihanna’s “10,000 miles apart” adage, but kidding aside, it’s clear that there’s a big difference between King sheets and California King sheets based on the surface area alone.

The California King has less surface area than a King. The California King has a surface area of 6,048 square inches while The King mattress has a surface area of 6,080 square inches.

This is why you should double-check the size of the 4 Piece set that you purchase to make sure that they fit perfectly. But what if you mistakenly bought the wrong size for your 4 piece sheet setThis leads us to the question -

Do California king sheets fit king-size beds?

The answer is no. As mentioned, standard King-sized beds are four inches wider and four inches shorter than a standard California King bed. Therefore, California King sheets will not fit a King bed and vice versa.

Pro tip: A quick way to help you know the difference between King sheets and California King sheets is by thinking that California is one of the longest states. California King sheets are longer than King sheets. You’re welcome *wink wink*
